We celebrated a beautiful day at the grand opening of the new Gerald R. Ford International Airport Viewing Park and Pavilion. With our friends at the airport, the Cascade Community Foundation and Owen-Ames-Kimball we re-opened the viewing park to the public introducing additional parking, the new pavilion for shade, new restroom facilities, new picnic tables and benches and new trash receptacles (which are large enough to slide a pizza box in after lunch!). Thanks to Pat Evans and the Grand Rapids Business Journal for featuring our own Tom Mathison and the architectural mentor program he started back in 1999. For 15 years Tom worked to connect students from the accredited architectural universities in Michigan to mentors around the country. Some years he had up to 250 student participants. Patients at Munson Hospital Cowell Cancer Center now have the opportunity to enjoy a new collection of books during their stay, thanks to a donation from the Rae Dumke Fund of the Michigan Architectural Foundation (MAF). With help from the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Rae Dumke, Hon. AIA, will be presenting the Build Imagination collection, a set of 100 books on topics that help foster children’s imaginations and raise awareness about architecture, to five children’s hospitals and cancer centers around the state. Grand Rapids, Mich. – It’s a favorite spot for aviation enthusiasts, families, and photographers, and now the Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GFIA) Viewing Park is getting a makeover. GFIA, in partnership with the Cascade Community Foundation (CCF), broke ground today on the Airport Viewing Park Project, a $1.12 million renovation that will add a pavilion, permanent restrooms, new seating areas, expanded parking spaces, and more.
