Facility condition assessments or facility condition studies provide a professional assessment of an existing facility and building systems. Following a collaborative process of information gathering with the client, the assessment identifies projects that are currently needed and estimates the useful life of each building system (i.e., building envelope, building systems, finishes, etc.). This is a critical part of the process of determining the cost of maintenance and improvement needed to bring systems into appropriate operating condition. Combined with a program statement, the facility assessment provides a foundation for determining the funding required to meet the project goals represented in the program.
As an extension of the assessment, feasibility studies review and evaluate potential alternatives for solutions to the difference between the existing condition and the desired program goals. The cost-benefit analysis is critical to determine the best option for the most reasonable cost.
