Each year the AIA recognizes excellence in design from its architectural members. Mathison I Mathison Architects is humbled to accept a residential design award from AIA Grand Rapids for their Deer Haven House project.
Custer and Steelcase distributed table bases to our West Michigan architecture and design partners and asked them to unleash their creativity by designing and building a customized, one-of-a-kind Bassline table top. The firms showcased their imagination and ingenuity by presenting their tables and vying for votes at last week’s annual Custer ArtPrize party.
Six firms from Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, and Portage participated in the competition—and with that many incredible designs, the decision was a difficult one for our guests! But with all the ballots cast and counted, the winner of the 2018 Bassline Competition is Mathison | Mathison Architects.
Mathison | Mathison Architects created a Bassline table that functioned as a tree stand and featured shelving around its exterior, which they used for bar accessories. The innovative, industrial design won over voters! Their design statement reads…
"Five years has flown by. We are thankful to our team, our amazing clients, our partners and vendors for your support." - Co-founders, Tom & Evan Mathison

With our friends at the airport, the Cascade Community Foundation and Owen-Ames-Kimball we re-opened the viewing park to the public introducing additional parking, the new pavilion for shade, new restroom facilities, new picnic tables and benches and new trash receptacles (which are large enough to slide a pizza box in after lunch!).
We were honored to to provide the design of the pavilion which was inspired by flight with the roof lines reflecting airplane wings and following the lines of flight that planes take as you watch them land and take off. The wood on the interior of the roof is rare as is the location of the park being the closest to any active runway in the United States.
Be sure to bring your family to the park to enjoy this incredible local gem!
After many many hours, multiple options, multiple cost estimates over a number of years, this project is finally underway! A proud moment for KCC and its student athletes, as well as the entire design and construction team led by MMA on the design side, and construction managers Walbridge / Schweitzer for implementation.
It had been pouring rain for twenty minutes before the ceremony, and it stopped just in time for a few photos. This ceremony was followed by a dinner and then a Board of Trustees meeting.
