Single occupant design; flexible and compact
Located on a remote 5 acre parcel near the Potomac River in Accokeek, Maryland, this modest single level house that was featured in the Washington Post; is a direct result of the HingeHouse pre-fab program. Designed to take advantage of the natural path of the sun, this house uses deep overhangs to create comfortable outdoor spaces and full walls of glass to harness the natural light for the interior during the cloudy winter months.
Designed for a single occupant with frequent visiting family, this house is flexible and compact. An adjacent garage structure with attached artist studio provides shelter for an outdoor room complete with a fireplace and hearth. Mahogany doors and windows, fiber cement siding and single slope roofs were used to provide a durable and simple envelope. The interior is painted white throughout, and the wood ceilings are stained white to provide a zen atmosphere that gives the vertical tree trunks outside the feeling of an artist rendering.
