Bespoke Homes
The main level kitchen, dining, and living spaces occupy the same area as in the original house with careful attention paid to the views in the established neighborhood. A dramatic vaulted ceiling carried by wood beams was used so that clerestory windows could capture southwest natural light for the entire space. Maximizing the unusually wide property dimension allowed the creation of separate new wings for the house, one for the garage and children’s bedrooms, and an opposing wing for the master bedroom suite and family room.
The result is a new outdoor room in the courtyard created by the wings, which adds privacy for the family and a sense of enclosure in the generous backyard. Aesthetically and programmatically, the layout of the residence relied on important components and relationships to retain a mid-century character, including special wood slat space dividers. The home is high-performing by means of high quality European windows, a tight exterior envelope, and features such as radiant floors and heat pump HVAC systems. The form of the home features deep overhangs and shed roofs which maximize shading opportunities.
