Overview

Thresholds is a nonprofit providing opportunities to those with developmental disabilities to live as productively and independently as possible in the community.

Their office-based staff were working from multiple aging buildings that lacked natural light and used space quite inefficiently. Like many nonprofits, Thresholds had focused their funding on their programs and made the most of the space they had. Thresholds engaged the MMA team to design a modern, light-filled, and welcoming office that would consolidate their buildings into a new 7,000 square foot home, including a clear and friendly front entry, over 25 private offices and workstations, two conference rooms, a kitchen, and meeting / consultation area.

Thresholds’ newly renovated office space is located at Special Olympics Michigan’s Unified Sports and Inclusion Center, now home to multiple non-profit organizations offering services to people with disabilities, allowing for collaboration and cross-programming between organizations and ease of access for those living with disabilities and their families. The space is within a former high school, and the new office design shifts the typical center school hallway to the courtyard side of the building, creating one contiguous suite for Thresholds, incorporating the reuse of the existing terrazzo floors, and carefully polishing adjacent concrete to ensure flush transitions to meet universal design guidelines. The new suite also includes a modern, yet approachable entrance area, welcoming guests and their families in a professional manner.
