The Downtown Center is one of Muskegon’s most ambitious adaptive reuse projects in many years, combining adjacent structures of two of Muskegon’s most historic and significant downtown structures - the former Muskegon Chronicle newspaper headquarters and production facility, and the former Muskegon Masonic Temple - into a single, unified educational facility for the relocation and expansion of programs in applied technology, manufacturing, archival libraries, entrepreneurship, and experiential learning from Muskegon Community College’s (MCC) main campus.

Muskegon Community College
Overview

MMA served as the programming and design leader to develop detailed space and equipment requirements, alternative layouts for the location of specific academic labs and classrooms, as well as student amenities and administration space. The identification of unifying horizontal and vertical internal circulation paths within the existing structures provided a framework for a complex integration of engineering systems and the introduction of natural light through the interior of the buildings. New floor levels were strategically inserted within existing spaces to add room for labs and classrooms, as well as to resolve internal circulation pathways for students, staff, and service equipment. As a result of an engaging programming and design process, the two adjacent buildings are united internally, while retaining the unique, historic exterior character and streetscape of each.
