Romence Place

Grand Rapids, Michigan20182,120 square feet

Romence Place is a light-filled home designed with modernist values on a tight lot nestled into an established neighborhood in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This young family was looking for a modern house with a private backyard area for their raised gardens and chicken coop.

Overview

Mathison | Mathison Architects (MMA) designed the single main living level around an outdoor courtyard, while maintaining clear separation between public and private living spaces. The floor plan is compact and efficient, with close attention paid to circulation, natural light, and views, making the home feel larger than its 2,120 square feet of living area. Clean detailing, simple material palettes and elegant use of natural light give the main living area the feelings of being in an outdoor pavilion. As the courtyard served as an extension of the indoor living space, its design was of equal importance. The courtyard includes a screened-in porch, deck, grassy yard, and raised garden beds.
