The Muskegon Museum of Art opened its doors in 1912 and has amassed over 5,000 pieces of art in its collection. The museum also hosts a multitude of events and educational programs, but recent growth and an expanding collection has made an expansion imperative.

Overview

Alongside lead designers Annum Architects, MMA is working closely with the museum to celebrate one of the most beloved art collections in Michigan, and to foster education and cultural enrichment with a wide variety of newly programmed space. The 26,000 SF expansion will double the size of the museum, and provide new space for changing exhibits, education, collections storage, and visitor amenities, including:

  • 4,000 SF ground-level gallery
  • an outdoor sculpture plaza
  • new museum store
  • new classrooms
  • additional gallery and event space that connects the new entry to the existing museum
  • 3,730 SF roof terrace for events

The new façade is composed of glass, a locally fabricated metal skin, and spot-iron brick, which serve as a contrasting complement to the original building’s historic limestone cladding. When complete, the newly renovated Muskegon Museum of Art will not only be a vibrant landmark for Muskegon but will stand out nationally as a leading-edge institution in a uniquely American mid-sized city.
